Tunnel Constructed Between Rec Sports & Physics/Nano

The new underground utility tunnel constructed between the
Rec Sports addition and what will be the new Physics/Nano
building. If you look closely, you can see where the tunnel
transitions from a "cast in place" concrete structure to a
"precast culvert" type construction.
The reason for this change to "precast" was that the con-
tractor had to stay within a one week road closure time
schedule, as what you are seeing in the picture is actually
Harvard Street. By utilizing the precast sections, the
under street tunnel installation took less than a day,
leaving the much needed time to reconstruct the street
and sidewalks.
Another issue that complicated this project was that the
tunnel ran under an electrical duct bank. You can see it
in the picture, temporarily supported by a steel beam and
many structural straps. The project was a success in that
the road was re-opened to traffic within the one week time
frame.
Thanks to David Rahn, Building Code Building Inspector, for
the picture and information.
